Dental Crowns
Rancho Palos Verdes, CA

Diagram of a dental CrownAt Palani Center for Dental Implants, we want to do all that we can to give our patients a fantastic smile. As time goes on, our teeth face problems such as discoloration, cracks, and decay. Crowns can be an effective way to counter the effects of such wear and tear. When placed upon a weakened tooth, a crown can prevent further problems and match the shade of your other teeth. This will help it blend in, keeping your smile natural and clean.

What Exactly Is A Dental Crown?

A crown is a tooth-shaped cover that protects a damaged tooth from further harm. After a mold is taken of your tooth, it is sent to a dental lab so that your crown can both fit nicely and look as closely as possible to how the tooth used to be. After the crown is created and placed on the tooth, you will recognize your old smile in the mirror. A crown is quite durable and, with proper brushing and flossing, should last about 10-15 years.

Why Would I Need A Dental Crown?

Because their use can be so multifaceted, there are multiple scenarios which would have our dentists recommend a dental crown during your appointment. If your tooth has been worn down or broken, a crown can avert further damage. Dental crowns can also be effective tools after operations like root canals or the insertion of dental bridges. A crown can also be used to cover a dental implant and improve its cosmetic appearance.

What Kinds of Crowns Are There?

•  Porcelain-based ceramic crowns can blend with your natural teeth.
•  Porcelain fused to metal, while more intensive, is a stronger restoration that can help with teeth that have suffered more damage.
•  Gold alloys make for a distinctive choice that is very compatible with your gum tissue.
•  Base metal alloys remove the least amount of healthy tooth structure and are gentle with opposing teeth

We also offer CEREC Crowns, which is advanced dental technology that we utilized for the restoration of decayed, cracked, or chipped teeth.

Which Crown Is Right For Me?

The choice of crowns can be a difficult one, but we at Palani Center for Dental Implants are here to help you with this important decision. Durability is a key factor when it comes to your choice of crown and, if that is your highest priority, then we would recommend the metal alloy and gold options. Without the metal fusing, porcelain crowns can be susceptible to damage, particularly if you grind your teeth at night. Porcelain-based crowns are visually appealing choices, but it is worth noting that they can aggravate nearby teeth if the adjacent surfaces become rough.

After A Crown

After a crown is placed, you may have some increased and temporary sensitivity to cold. You should not experience pain when you bite using the crowned tooth. If you do, this means that your crown is probably too high and you should call us to correct the placement. Your crowned tooth is now protected from decay, but make sure to continue taking care of your gum line. It is easy to forget about the risk of gum disease and you should keep up your brushing and flossing routine around the crowned tooth.

Crowns can last a lifetime and keep your smile shining. If you believe that a crown could be the right choice for you or if you want help cleaning the crown you already have, please call us today at (310) 894-8337.
