Ways Your Mouth Neutralizes Acids

Posted on 4/10/2020 by Giri Palani
Ways Your Mouth Neutralizes Acids The best way to reduce the development of decay is to neutralize the acids in the mouth. One of the best ways to neutralize mouth acids is to rinse the mouth with water after you eat or to use a mouth rinse that will reduce the acid level in the mouth. This can be done by choosing a baking soda or fluoride mouth rinse. You can also eat certain foods that help cut down on the acids.

How to Stop Acid Erosion in the Mouth

Mouth acids often cause erosion of the tooth's enamel. These acids help people digest their food or may develop from eating or drinking certain foods or beverages. Sugar is not the only reason that people experience decay or enamel erosion. Their enamel can also erode if they eat high-acid products and foods. Therefore, acid erosion can be neutralized by veering away from certain foods or reducing your exposure to highly acidic foods. These foods and drinks may include wine, citric fruits, such as lemons, limes, or oranges, or some fruit juices, such as lemon, orange, or cranberry juices. To prevent these beverages from harming the teeth, use a straw when you drink. While sugar does not contain a high level of acid, it still produces acid-causing bacteria, and therefore promotes an acidic environment in the mouth.

How Can You Tell You Have Some Tooth Erosion?

Again, you can experience tooth erosion if you do not neutralize mouth acids, which can lead to discoloration and sensitivity. For example, you may notice twinges of pain when you drink or eat very hot or cold foods or beverages. Your teeth will also look more yellow as the enamel slowly wears away. Some teeth take on a sand-blasted appearance while other teeth may develop small cracks or some roughness around the edges. In addition, cupping may appear on the chewing surfaces of teeth. A filling may look like it is rising out of the tooth. As you can see erosion can indeed have an effect on the health of your teeth. That is why it is important to take good care of your smile and make sure you are eating and drinking the right foods and beverages. We can help you address any signs of erosion that you may have.
