Does Your Tooth Require an Inlay?

Posted on 9/20/2019 by Giri Palani
Does Your Tooth Require an Inlay? So, you have a cavity and you have heard that you may need an inlay and you have questions. What exactly is an inlay? How is it different from a filling? Is this the same as getting a crown? Today we will look at some of the different circumstances and what type of repair is appropriate to restore your smile.

Inlay Vs. Filling

Cavities are most commonly handled by cleaning out the decayed area, removing any debris and decay and then filling the tooth with either a composite filling or a traditional silver filling. If the cavity has gone untreated or the decay covers a larger area, we may recommend that you consider an inlay instead. They are often used interchangeably, but inlays are more effective at covering larger cavities.

The difference between an inlay and a filling is how the tooth is filled. Once the area has been cleaned, we create a single solid piece of material that will fit into the cavity. Great care is given to ensure that the inlay is the exact shape and size of the empty space in your tooth left by the decay. This tight fit ensures that no food or bacteria can enter the voided space and cause further decay.

Cavities are no fun, and they can cause pain, tooth sensitivity and if left untreated, even lead to tooth loss, but we have solutions for you. Call our office today and schedule your next checkup. At your exam, we will thoroughly check for abnormalities and cavities using tools, x-rays and dyes if necessary. If we do find a problem, our skilled staff will go over your options with you and help you decide how to properly repair any damage. A healthy, strong simile and a happy patient are our goals! Give us a call today!
