Top 3 Reasons You May Need a Dental Crown

Top 3 Reasons You May Need a Dental CrownGetting a dental crown is not a step that you should take lightly. It is, after all, a significant investment in your dental health.

However, there are a number of reasons you may need to consider a crown. Here are some of the common reasons we see patients get dental crowns.

Your Teeth Wear Out

Over time, things wear down. This is true of everything, including your teeth. After years of eating hot and cold foods, crunching down on different things, and (against our advice) chewing on ice, the hardened enamel of the tooth begins to wear out.

This can be due to normal wear and tear, bruxism, or other reasons. Whatever the reason, a crown is a good way to replace the worn chewing surface.

Remove Significant Decay

Usually, if you have a cavity, you will get a filling. However, in cases where the decay is too widespread to be treated with a filling, we may suggest a crown. Using a crown will let us save the root of the tooth while replacing the decayed top. And, like a filling, with the proper care, your crown should last for decades to come.

Replacing Old Fillings

Fillings, as marvelous as they are, do eventually fail. When that happens, some people are able to simply have the filling replaced with another filling, and keep on going. However, many of our patients find that the old filling cannot be replaced with a new one, and a crown is the better route to take.

If you're not sure what you should do, please feel free to come talk with us. We are here to help you, and we'll help educate you as to the reasons you may need a dental crown. So, give us a call, or swing by the office, and let us help you.
